We’re beyond excited to be hosting an evening of inspiration and community with the world-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor. Through compelling poetry and readings from her new book, The Body Is Not An Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love, Sonya will discuss how the notion of “radical” demands that we deal with the intersections of our social, political and economic lives in relationship to our bodies. In a recent podcast, she says:

“If the body positivity movement isn’t changing the way in which all bodies get to live unencumbered and free, then it is only replicating a system that already exists…it is not radical. We need to keep pressing the outer boundaries of body positivity. Is it okay to be body-positive at XXX pounds or when we are quadriplegic, an undocumented person, or trans? We keep asking: how far does my body positivity stretch? Because that is our personal bias, that’s where we get to see where our own prejudice lives, and we get to unpack that for ourselves…Love shouldn’t have a ceiling. Love should be boundless and expansive and all encompassing and so if my love has a ceiling (i.e., self and others), what is that about? Who put that ceiling there? Who’s keeping it in place?”

Together, we can create a community where we get to be brave and celebratory about all bodies. We hope you can come join us for what is sure to be a powerful evening!
