Many leaders in the social justice movement have blinders on when it comes to addressing weight bias and size discrimination in their liberation work. We cause harm when we reinforce that body size is correctable and fatphobia runs rampant in our society, often going unchecked. What we’ve been taught to believe about bodies and health is rooted in biased data and primarily benefits the multi-billion dollar diet and cosmetic fitness industries. While weight bias impacts all of us, people on the higher end of the weight spectrum are significantly impacted and their health suffers. Many larger bodied folks avoid activities they enjoy because movement spaces collude with diet culture under the guise of health promotion. In this interactive workshop, Hilary and Dana will guide participants through a series of activities to help yoga teachers, fitness professionals, and health care providers create size-inclusive spaces for the people they serve.
