Promoting Body Trust® in Clinical Practice
An E-Course for Helping Professionals

We often talk to helping professionals who want to offer clients a different conversation about bodies, weight and health, but feel uncertain about what steps to take to be truly helpful. We have created a course to help you work from an inclusive and supportive paradigm to help people heal their relationship with food and body.

When the evidence that obesity is a risk factor is incomplete and contradictory, at best, and the most consistent effect of weight loss at two years is weight gain (Mann et al, 2007), we believe it is time for a new conversation. Over the past 11+ years, we have developed the language and philosophy of Body Trust® to help people heal body shame and move toward a compassionate model of self-care. We are so excited to share what we’ve learned with you.

Knowing how to ethically and skillfully have this new conversation about food and body concerns in a climate of weight stigma feels challenging to many helping professionals. While most providers are aware that they don’t want to contribute to the body shaming and size bias that is commonplace in health care settings (and rampant in our culture), many find their training is simply inadequate to challenge the dominant paradigm and practice from a weight-neutral perspective. You may feel like there are potential landmines in your conversations with clients when body concerns come up, and you don’t know what to say or do. Or maybe you feel uncertain about how to unpack your own internalized body shame and move towards body positivity. Perhaps you want to know how all of this impacts health.

We’ve always loved discussing a weight-neutral approach with providers, and for years we facilitated a training titled Health at Every Size® in Clinical Practice. We have a combined 30 years of clinical experience. From 2008 to 2012, we were adjunct counseling faculty in the Eating Disorder Certificate Program at Lewis and Clark College. We are passionate about this inclusive paradigm because we have seen it help people and systems shift from fear and shame based short-term solutions (dieting culture) to sustainable practices that truly support a person’s health and well-being (providers included).

Now we have created an online course just for helping professionals. This course will give you a taste of our work in four modules:

  • The Evidence for a Weight-Inclusive Paradigm
  • The Core Competencies of Body Trust Wellness
  • The Value of Embodiment
  • Bringing a Body Trust Approach into Your Work

The content of this e-course will be delivered to your email six days a week for one month (starting on the day you register) in bite sized pieces for you to integrate over time. We will also offer two web-based calls per year to check in, case conference, and answer questions in a live format. We believe the course materials, along with the conference calls for support, will help you understand and incorporate the material into your practice. Because of the nature of this e-course (once you sign up, the lessons are automatically delivered), all sales are final. Because of the rigorous approval process for online courses (compared to in-person trainings), we are not currently offering continuing education credits. We hope to be able to offer CEUs sometime in the future.

And, by the way, this e-course is a pre-requisite for becoming a Certified Body Trust® Provider.
